Herbal Tea Safety During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

A helpful guide for navigating what’s safe, what to limit, and how to support your body naturally.

When you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s completely normal to pause and question what’s safe—especially when it comes to herbal teas. While herbal blends are some of the most nourishing, comforting drinks you can enjoy, not every ingredient is appropriate for every season of life.

As an herbalist and mother, I’ve put together a quick-reference guide to help you feel confident choosing what’s right for you.

Teas That Are Generally Considered Safe

These blends are made with gentle, nourishing herbs that are traditionally used and widely regarded as safe for both pregnancy and breastfeeding:

  • Summer Sunrise – Linden, Spearmint, Lemon Balm, Hibiscus, Rose

  • Evening Garden – Linden, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Oatstraw, Rose

  • Wildberry Bliss – Strawberry Leaf, Lemon Balm, Elderflower, Orange Peel, Rose

  • Blush & Bloom – Peach, Chamomile, Lemon Balm, Lemongrass, Rose, Orange Peel

  • Citrus Mint Revive – Lemongrass, Spearmint, Lemon Balm, Lemon Peel, Nettle

Teas to Use with Caution

These blends contain herbs that are traditionally used in postpartum or specific situations, but may not be ideal for pregnancy. Always consult your care provider if unsure.

  • Decaf Chai – Rooibos + warming spices

  • Golden Harmony – Tulsi, turmeric, lemongrass

  • Heart & Soul – Tulsi, hawthorn, lavender

  • Breathe Easy – Licorice root, tulsi, elderflower

→ Best enjoyed postpartum or while breastfeeding, but not recommended during pregnancy.

Teas to Avoid During Pregnancy

These blends contain caffeine or more stimulating herbs, and are better reserved for postpartum or general wellness:

  • Traditional Chai – Black tea + spices

  • Verdant Morning – Green tea

  • Rooted Morning – Black tea, roasted roots

  • Renew & Restore – Diuretic/detox herbs like parsley, cleavers, horsetail, and ginkgo

Final Thoughts

Herbal teas can be a beautiful, supportive part of your pregnancy or postpartum journey—but like anything, it’s always wise to check with your care provider. Everyone’s body is different, and what’s safe for most may not be right for all.

When in doubt, stick with blends made from gentle herbs like lemon balm, oatstraw, nettle, chamomile, rose, linden, and spearmint—all deeply nourishing and calming for both mama and baby.
