Hibiscus: The Bold, Beautiful Herb with a Tangy Twist

Why I Love Using This Vibrant Flower in My Teas

Some herbs are quiet and subtle — and some walk into the room with a burst of color and confidence. Hibiscus is definitely the latter.

Its ruby-red calyces, tart flavor, and powerful wellness benefits make it a staple in several of my favorite blends. It adds both beauty and brightness — not just to your teacup, but to how you feel after drinking it.

I love including hibiscus when I want something that’s both refreshing and supportive. You’ll find it in Immune Boosting, Heart & Soul, and (just a touch) in Summer Sunrise for added depth and color.

Wait—Which Hibiscus Is for Tea?

The hibiscus you see lining suburban streets (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) isn’t what ends up in your mug.

For tea we use Hibiscus sabdariffa (often called Roselle). After the pale yellow flowers fade, this variety forms thick, cranberry-colored calyces around the seed pod. Those calyces are harvested, dried, and give us that signature tangy-red infusion.

How to Use Hibiscus

Hibiscus makes a fantastic iced tea (the tartness really shines cold!), but it’s also cozy and grounding when served warm. Steep 1–2 tsp for 10–15 min. It’s caffeine-free and generally safe, though its pressure-lowering effect means you’ll want to be mindful if you’re on similar medication.

Hibiscus pairs beautifully with lemon balm, elderberry, ginger, cinnamon, and mint — which is exactly why I love it in the Immune Boosting blend.

Where to Find It in My Line-up

Immune Boosting

Tangy-sweet, berry-bright. Hibiscus adds a powerful vitamin C punch and just the right amount of tartness to lift the immune-supportive herbs.

Heart & Soul

Soft florals, gentle warmth. Hibiscus pairs beautifully with rose and hawthorn to nourish the heart—physically and emotionally.

Summer Sunrise

Beautifully balanced, softly herbal with a whisper of tart-sweet depth. This blend isn’t minty or citrus-forward—it’s harmoniously layered. Linden leads with its delicate, honey-like notes, and a gentle touch of hibiscus adds color and brightness without overtaking the blend.
